About writing Part 1

29 May

Novels, what is a novel?  I am currently writing some so I thought the blog should reflect this passions.  I am not an expert by no stretch, though I have researched the subject quite thoroughly.  Here is what I’ve learned.  A novel it is a group of pages making up a story.  Told I was not an expert, what were you expecting.  Not specific enough.  There are threads upon threads weaving several stories together about characters and events.  Every writer’s style will lean toward different aspects of either character, environment or the events.  Myself, I lean toward characters.  Yes, I could get into the dynamics of what makes up a story from the protagonist to the antagonist.  None of this is important, and yet it is.

Today is the Age of Entitlement.  Before ‘they‘ or ‘those that be‘ named it, I was calling it Generation More.  Anyone and everyone can right a story.  Don’t believe me… one word… Twilight.  If the woman wanted to write a romance novel, she could of.  No need to destroy an entire Genre.  (Vampires DON’T sparkle).  But, everyone is entitled.  Talent not a requirement.  Anyone can publish a book, it just takes some greenbacks and Amazon will publish as will a dozen or so other sites.  We are an interest point in history where talent is no longer required for anything.  Everyone is playing carpenter, auto mechanic, home decorator, painter, writer, artist, athlete… you name it.  Talent is no longer required as everyone is entitled.  Gone are the days when you trained you entire life for a career.  Now, everything is ‘just good enough‘, expectations are at an all time low and frankly I do not see things getting better.  Oh, don’t worry, I’m Entitled to my opinion.  I digress…

Writing!  Couple of thoughts on writing, if you are inspired to write something after you watch a movie or read a book; chances are you are stealing someones thoughts, words, ideas, characters or story.  Plagiarism is a word you need to know very well before you begin write, even something as simple as a damn Greeting Card.  If you want to steal something, try the bank, the reward is immediate (chances are, so is the punishment).

an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author: It is said that he plagiarized Thoreau’s plagiarism of a line written by Montaigne. Synonyms: appropriation, infringement, piracy, counterfeiting; theft, borrowing, cribbing, passing off.

a piece of writing or other work reflecting such unauthorized use or imitation: “These two manuscripts are clearly plagiarisms,” the editor said, tossing them angrily on the floor.
By simply change a couple names, does not new story make.

“To be a leader, you must stand for something, or you will fall for anything.” – Anthony Pagano

Leadership is not as specific as some might think.  An artist can be a leader simply by being the best they can be.  Stand by what you think is right, and don’t bend to popular opinion.  The same is true for writing.  I personally write for me.  If I do not like it, how could I possibly expect others to do so.  Be a leader in your own fan fair, just don’t be diluted in thinking that crap is still crap.  Remember, only an idiot thinks they are perfect.

Going to Sci-Fi Valley Con

27 May

In the early dawn hours of Friday, May 18th 2012, intrepid members of Speakeasy Primates set out on a road trip. What exciting destination lay ahead of them? Were they retracing some long-forgotten trek through the untamed wild?

As anyone who has traveled the length of Pennsylvania State highway 219 will tell you… yes we pretty much were. Coordinating our travel by cel phone became problematic as there are many back-woods areas where there is no cel coverage at all.

At least if you have Virgin mobile… grrr…

In fact one of our members became so lost that when he tried to double-back he found the road he had turned down was now chained closed [some sort of hunting road?] LOL Nathan can tell you himself when he finally gets around to writing some of these…:)

We did arrive in Ebensburg for the 1st annual Sci-Fi Valley Con and wouldn’t ya know it?

A good time was had by all!

Oh yeah…

“Sometimes things become possible if we want them bad enough.” – T.S. Eliot

So the question is, how bad do you want it?  If you want something bad enough, through adversity you will find the drive you need.  Say it often and find a way to make it happen.  Achievement is hard work, success is the reward.

Who needs writer’s block when you’ve got… kids?

26 May

I thought this might be a good time to share a tale of when I was beset by a serious obstacle in my writing. One that would not allow me to continue for a period of time. Was I suffering writer’s block, you might ask? Well, read on to find out: “Who needs writer’s block when you’ve got… kids?”

So… I went to do some writing the other day and the keyboard was not responding. Now I was understandably perplexed… why isn’t my keyboard working?

I tried a re-boot…

I received an error message “Keyboard Failure.”

This seemed ominous. I tried to inspect the keyboard to see if there was any… obvious damage, like maybe a wire disconnected or whatever. That’s when I noticed something odd.

Well I suppose NOT odd really… I mean NOT all that odd if a keyboard is supposed to SLOSH!!!!!!

That’s right.  SLOSH!

Hmm… this bears investigation… some of the keys are a little sticky…

I turn the keyboard upside down and Fruit Punch spills all over my desk top.

My OLDEST daughter informs me that my YOUNGEST daughter had spilled her juice all over the keyboard and she had tried to wipe it up… “Yes,” I patiently inform her “the desk was wiped up… THAT’s WHY DADDY DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING WAS WRONG!!!!!”

Did she think the juice INSIDE the keyboard would just dry up eventually????? I dis-assembled my keyboard, cleaned everything, dried everything and put it all back together {sigh}.

As you can tell … IT WORKED!

When I asked my daughter why she didn’t tell me, she gave me the line about NOT wanting to get in trouble.

“Yes, But ya see… the thing is daddy, well I… I… I…”

“YOU WHAT!?!?” I asked getting exasperated.

“Well, the thing is… I wanted a sip of her juice… and she wouldn’t give it to me…”

The little darlings. LOL.

“When you think you can’t…  revisit  a previous triumph.”  – Jack  Canfield

The difference between someone that can and can’t is practice.  Skill can be learned; accomplishments cannot.  Anything, and I mean anything can be accomplished and achieved if you are willing to do the work.  Work is made up of practice and practice and more practice.  The end result is triumph.  Don’t beleive me, could you ride a bike the first time?  Could you skate the first time without falling?
